Standing along the A2 highway north of Isiolo, you cannot miss the towering, sheer cliffs of Mount Ololokwe (Ol Donyo Sabachi). Known as the sacred mountain of the Samburu people, this massive flat-topped monolith stands proudly above the dry northern scrublands.
The Ascent Trail
Trekking Ololokwe is a full-day commitment that takes you through multiple distinct environments:
- The Dry Base: The hike begins in dry acacia bushland where local Samburu guides lead the way along ancient elephant migration routes.
- The Steep Gully: The middle section climbs aggressively through a rocky gorge. Expect scrambling over boulders and steep inclines.
- The High Canopy Forest: Once you reach the top plateau, the dry heat vanishes. You step into a lush indigenous forest filled with cedar trees, wild orchids, and vibrant birdlife.
Camping on the Summit Rim
Camping on the edge of the Ololokwe plateau is a bucket-list experience. Setting up camp near the cliff faces gives you front-row seats to sunrise over the vast Samburu plains stretching toward Marsabit.
"Watching the morning mist clear off the northern plains from 2,000 meters up is something you never forget."
Practical Planning Tip
- Guide Requirement: You must hire a local Samburu guide from the base community. Not only does this ensure safety on unlabeled paths, but it also directly supports the local economy.
- Best Time to Visit: June to October and December to February during the dry windows.
